Description

This is an idea I first had several months ago, which I hauled out of my sketchbook on the occasion of the US hitting its debt ceiling last Monday.

Most of the discussion by policy-makers in DC and media pundits seems to be aimed at pinning the blame for this on "entitlements," which is thinly-veiled code for programs and legislation designed to help the poorest and most disadvantaged members of society–minorities, the elderly, children, et cetera. Blaming it on tax cuts for the wealthy seems to be a close second, but as usual, the cost of a multi-front war whose main purpose is the funneling of money to "defense" contractors has been glossed over, if not totally forgotten.

More details concerning this cartoon's background and development can be found on my website. Please click here if you liked it and have a little cash to throw my way.

“blame for this on "entitlements," which is thinly-veiled code for programs and legislation designed to help the poorest and most disadvantaged members of society–minorities, the elderly, children, et cetera.”

Key word there being “designed to,” which isn’t a guarantee that they work. You want to defend entitlements? Fine. But at least defend them with facts rather than emotional outbursts like “oh, you just hate the poor and needy.” Because from my research, programs like Medicare and Social Security do jack squat, especially considering how they’re both going bankrupt. Even if you don’t believe in scrapping them (though in my opinion, they need to be privatized…oh, scary, I know!), at least admit they need reform.

But you’re right in suggesting that out overbloated defense budget is to blame. That I will commend you on. Your blind worship of entitlement programs, not so much.
